What does courage mean to you? Do you think we can be courageous in our personal and professional life? Do you think we have the opportunity and responsibility to be courageous?

Simon Sinek in his best-selling book Leaders Eat Last identifies courage as the most important characteristic of a leader. Sinek also says that “our relationships and connections provide us with courage and that we are kidding ourselves if we think we can make it through life without relationships and courage.” In this excellent book, Sinek tells the story of Johnny Bravo. It is an amazing story of courage and leadership. Johnny Bravo is the pilot of a Warthog or A-10 aircraft during the war in Afghanistan. Under heavy clouds, Johnny Bravo and his wingman took heavy fire, but because of their courageous actions that dark night in the mountains of Afghanistan, 22 soldiers went home alive!

Courage like Johnny Bravo and his wingman helps us work toward a common purpose and develop both strong professional and personal relationships that strengthen us and provide us with that deep purpose to do things that we would ordinally think impossible. Much like sports when the underdog wins the game, like those protecting us through the armed services like Johnny Bravo, and our many unsung healthcare heroes such as our value analysis professionals. Those that work tirelessly to find products during disruptions and those that continue to look for saving opportunities while continuing to provide quality healthcare.

Being part of something bigger than yourself enables you to achieve more than you could on your own. It enables you to be part of a group of like-minded people. It gives you tangible accomplishments. It gives effort meaning. So, what is your purpose? Where can you show your courage?

I believe each of you are the leaders necessary to leave healthcare better than we found it and I am excited to stand beside you in courage!
