October 2020

Message from the President
Dear ASHHRA Colleagues,
October is the gateway to autumn. The weather gets cooler (in most places), leaves start falling, football kicks into high gear and when Halloween arrives, we start thinking about the up and coming holiday season. I was optimistic that October would be the start of a positive run with lower COVID numbers, less destructive weather and fewer wildfires out west. Alas, it was not meant to be.

The COVID-19 crisis has put tremendous strain on hospitals, and the professionals behind the scenes that ensure our health care workforce is qualified, engaged, protected, and prepared to provide the best care. During times of high stress like these, we often want to know what others in similar HR roles did, so we can compare strategies, share lessons learned, and plan for the future. The COVID Response Tactics Survey (CRTS) takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and members can expect a report based on the findings within a few weeks of the survey close. The survey will remain open until Oct. 23, 2020. Click here to participate now.

While background screening and drug screening can present their own unique challenges, they are necessary to maintain a safe workplace — something of paramount importance to all business owners. In this webinar, we will review best practices for staying compliant under federal and local law, including FCRA, “Ban the Box,” and Salary History. Additionally, as drug screening laws continue to change across various states, we will discuss where we stand now and what to expect next. Finally, we will talk about the industry trends that affect us all. Throughout it all, we will emphasize EEOC best practices and the importance of proper processes, documentation and communication in light of new privacy laws. This webinar will provide participants with actionable information that can be used in assessing their own background screening programs in order to mitigate legal and financial risk.

We know that prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, demand for health care workers and health care job openings were at record highs. We also know that the pandemic created pressure to quickly ramp up staffing levels and optimize surge capacity, even as the cancellation of non-emergent surgeries caused serious financial challenges for hospitals and health systems. The AHA recently released the 2021 Health Care Talent Scan to help you better understand the latest forces and trends affecting the health care workforce.
