I hope each of you are taking some time to enjoy your summer whether its graduations, vacations, or just relaxing around your home. Summer is a busy, yet exciting time. Amid the busyness, don’t forget to take some time and register for this year’s conference. It’s just a few short months away.

The application for the Summer 2018 CHHR Exam Scholarship launches Monday, June 25! The Certified in Healthcare Human Resources (CHHR) designation is the only professional certification specific to those in health care HR. ASHHRA members who apply for a CHHR Scholarship will be considered to receive a voucher for the full CHHR exam fee (a $295 value!).

Improving communication and teamwork skills can enhance the work of health care teams and optimize patient outcomes. Next week, June 20-22, the AHA is hosting a Team Training National Conference in San Diego for health care organizations to improve patient safety by successfully implementing and sustaining TeamSTEPPS, an evidence-based set of teamwork tools. Hospitals and health systems across the U.S. have used TeamSTEPPS to improve quality and safety.

Did you know that 20 percent of employee turnover happens in the first 90 days of employment? That’s according to IDC Research, and the finding underscores the importance of addressing the need for an effective onboarding process. This is often especially acute in industries with traditionally higher turnover such as retail, health care and manufacturing.

A majority of organizations — 80 percent according to a new study from HR Metrics & Analytics Summit — use employee records and data to measure performance, turnover, retention, recruitment and engagement. However, employees believe this is appropriate only to a certain point.

Physician attire impacts patient satisfaction, with preferences for clinician couture varying by care setting and patient attributes such as age, researchers have found. Out of 4062 patients surveyed, 53 percent said physician attire was important to them.

Suicide is a challenging concern for health care workers, with an estimated 300 to 400 physicians dying from suicide in the U.S. each year. However, the same type of national data on nurse suicide rates is lacking. Nurse leaders should recognize and respond to factors that contribute to nurse suicide.
