Dear HR Colleagues,

Let’s get ready to juggle!

Fall is one of my favorite times of year. Days get shorter, temperatures get cooler and that means sweater weather is right around the corner!

It’s also the time that kiddos head back to school, and that can mean already busy schedules are set to get even busier. Balancing time between work and keeping up with school and sporting events, practices and life itself can all feel a bit overwhelming, and that can translate to a sense of chaos for a segment of our workforce.

Luckily, we can provide support and tips to help our employees create balance and stay organized through it all.

Develop a Master Schedule

• If you aren’t already doing so, use a shared digital calendar (like Google Calendar) for family plans where everyone’s schedules are visible. Be sure to include work commitments, children’s activities and personal appointments so you don’t overcommit or miss anything.

• Set aside time each week to review and update the schedule, prioritizing important events.

Set Priorities and Boundaries

• Identify the most important tasks each day and focus on those first. Use a to-do list to track daily and weekly priorities.

• Allocate specific times for work, family, and personal activities. Stick to these blocks as much as possible to stay focused and organized. When possible, avoid bringing work home or working beyond your set hours.

Streamline Routine Tasks

• Although it takes some careful planning and more time on the front end, consider batch cooking so that meals are prepped and ready for the week ahead. Don’t have the time for weekly meal prep and planning? Meal delivery services have come a long way with quality and variety and can be a life saver when schedules are tight. Plus, it helps to avoid fast food as the go-to option.

• Use technology to automate recurring tasks (like bill payments) and delegate responsibilities when possible.

• Create a chore chart for family members to share responsibilities so everyone does their part to stay on track with routine items.

Leverage Resources

• Have backup plans for unexpected changes, such as a sick child or last-minute work demands.

• Explore community resources like after-school programs, childcare centers or playgroups.

• Connect with other parents for support, advice and potential carpooling options.

• Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family or friends.

Practice Self-Care

• Set aside time for yourself, whether it’s a hobby, exercise or just relaxation. It’s essential to recharge and prevent burnout.

• Don’t be afraid to access Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services if you need additional resources and support.

Communicate Effectively

• Regularly discuss schedules and any changes with your family. This helps everyone stay on the same page and manage expectations.

• Be clear with your employer about your availability and any family commitments that may affect your work schedule. Make sure to plan ahead and avoid last-minute disruptions.

Reflect and Adjust

• Periodically review how well your schedule is working and make adjustments as needed.

• Acknowledge and celebrate achievements, no matter how small, to stay motivated.

We all bring our whole selves to work and gone are the days of fully separating work and personal lives. Let’s be open to flexible or remote work schedules if appropriate and prioritize family commitments. Finding balance takes time and experimentation, so be patient, give grace, and stay flexible as your employees navigate this time of year. Above all, make time to have conversations to let employees know they’re not alone. If we prioritize caring for our people, they’ll be prepared to take care of our patients!
