Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) unveiled its new $33 million cargo facility yesterday. The new facility is intended to support the airport’s ability to handle domestic and international freight.

>> Evansville Regional Airport begins solar project
A celebration was held Monday at Evansville Regional Airport to commemorate the beginning of construction of a new $6.5 million solar covered parking canopy. The parking installation will generate 1.3 megawatts of power and will supply one-half of the terminal’s power. The new canopy will cover nearly 400 parking spaces and will be the largest of its kind in the U.S.

An immense structure now towers over the existing terminals at Salt Lake City International Airport. One year from now, that facility will open to the public, replacing the airport that has served Utah since the 1960s. Airport Executive Director Bill Wyatt says everything is on schedule.

Delta Air Lines is launching biometric technology at more airports across the United States as a means to speed up the boarding process at airports and make traveling more efficient. The airline said it expanded its facial recognition technology to four more airports over the last year – Detroit, Minneapolis-St Paul, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.

United Airlines’ ConnectionSaver tool, released in June 2019, has already proven its value to the company and its customers in under three months’ time. To date, the product has helped United to save the connections of about 40,000 passengers, just weeks since the app was expanded to serve all of United’s domestic hubs.

The financial damage incurred by airlines over the grounding of Boeing MAX 737 has at least one carrier taking the economic blow to its employees into consideration.

>> British Airline pilots begin first strike in 100-year history leaving hundreds of planes grounded
Britain’s airports were eerily quiet yesterday morning as the first day of a British Airways pilot strike began – the first for the company in its 100 years of operation. Tens of thousands of passengers have been affected. British Airways normally operates up to 850 flights a day, and they have cancelled almost all of them, including international flights into Great Britain from North America.

>> Heathrow airport says it aims to stay open during drone disruption
Britain’s Heathrow Airport said it will work to ensure it stays open and can operate safely during planned drone disruption by climate activists due to start on Friday. A group calling itself Heathrow Pause has said it plans to disrupt the airport with toy dronesstarting Sept. 13, a step they hope will ground flights and put pressure on the government to take tougher steps to reduce carbon emissions.
