With Hurricane Ida slamming the Gulf Coast on Sunday, August 29, 2021, with winds at 150 mph, we are reminded that we are only halfway through the 2021 Hurricane Season that began June 1st and does not end until November 30th.  With the worst months for hurricanes yet to come, the time to review preparedness is now.

September is National Preparedness Month.  Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security, this campaign encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies. For more information, see National Preparedness Month | Ready.gov

The 2021 theme is “Prepare to Protect.  Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”  Each week in September, the campaign focuses on a different aspect for preparedness.
  • Week 1, September 1-4:  Make a Plan – how will your County communicate before, during and after a disaster?  Make sure your County’s plan is updated based on the recommendations of the CDC due to Coronavirus at National Preparedness Month | CDC.
  • Week 2, September 5-11:  Ready Business Toolkits – available at www.ready.gov/business.  Toolkits includes a hazard-specific version for hurricane, power outage, and severe wind/tornado and provides a step-by-step guide to build preparedness within your County.
  • Week 3, September 12-18:  Low-Cost, No-Cost Preparedness – Know the risk of a disaster in your area.  This is a good time to review the Hurricane Checklist from ACCG Insurance Programs click here.
  • Week 4, September 19-25:  Teach Youth about Preparedness - support the needs of the whole community.  Community Health Resilience is the ability of people, businesses, governments, nonprofits groups and faith-based organizations to work together to create systems that can withstand, adapt to, and recover from any emergency.   Visit www.ready.gov/september for additional information and resources.
