Import cargo volume at America’s top container ports will slow in December but growth will likely continue at least through April, according to the latest Global Port Tracker report. The U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation reports double-digit increases from a year ago in steel, grain and salt cargo tonnage transiting the international waterway.

Port of Long Beach
The Port of Everett is investing $2.55 million to upgrade the heavy-lift cargo handling capacity of its South Port Terminal and $10.2 million for rail line enhancements. The Port of Galveston celebrated its Cruise Terminal 2 expansion project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 9.

Port of Hueneme reports FY 2014 was its best ever for gross revenue and second best for cargo tonnage and is preparing to invest millions of dollars in capital improvements and infrastructure upgrades. The board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & Jersey has adopted a $2.9 billion operating budget and a $3.6 billion capital budget that funds critical infrastructure at the agency’s airports, tunnels, bridges, port facilities, PATH commuter rail system and World Trade Center site.

Austin Yang is the new controller at the Port of Hueneme. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners recently approved the promotion of Matt Plezia to director of master planning at the Port of Long Beach.  Veteran law enforcement official Tom Gazsi has joined the Los Angeles Port Police as deputy chief. Carol Whitmore has been elected to a third one-year term as chairwoman of the Manatee County Port Authority, the governing board of Port Manatee.

The Board of Long Beach Harbor Commissioners has approved a new incentive program to reward shipping lines for taking part in testing of new air pollution-control technology for vessels. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory say they've measured "dramatic reductions" in diesel emissions at the Port of Oakland. The Port of San Diego will serve as the first demonstration site in a series of regional public-private smart building initiatives to advance the region’s smart city goals.

Port of Oakland cranes are becoming symbols of civic pride in this Bay Area port city.  Real estate and marine cargo operations at the Port of Tacoma supported more than 29,000 jobs in 2013, which generated nearly $3 billion in economic activity, according to a study presented earlier this month to the port commission.
