To help member ports get a jump on submitting entries into next year’s AAPA Communications Awards Program, the documents required for submitting entries have been posted to the AAPA website

One change for the 2015 program (to address a key goal in AAPA’s updated Strategic Plan to serve ports of all types and sizes) is to factor in the size of each port’s communications budget when determining the final score for each entry. To that end, some scores may be adjusted after judging so that small, medium and large ports’ chances for winning awards are relatively equalized. In the rules document, ports are instructed to indicate whether their total public relations, marketing and advertising budget, including related salaries, is less than $200,000, between $200,000 and $600,000, or greater than $600,000.

Another change for 2015 will be that the Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Excellence – the top honor in the communications competition – will be awarded to the highest scoring single entry rather than totaling the scores of all of each port’s winning entries to determine which is highest. In the event of a tie for the highest scoring entry, a group of four communications competition judges, selected at random from the approximately 36 that volunteer each year to review the entries, will choose the winner of the Dan Maynard Award.
