October was yet another month of record growth for the Georgia Port Authority, with cargo tonnage, container TEUs, truck gages moves, and intermodal rail container volumes at all-time highs. The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling nearly 1.3 million TEUs in October, a drop from the preceding month, but up 3.0 percent from October 2013.

Port of Long Beach
The board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has approved the continuation of a program that helps port truckers replace older, higher-polluting vehicles with newer, cleaner burning ones. Bamboo grasses sprouting from giant concrete boxes that stretch the length of two football fields are helping to remove pollutants from the stormwater runoff at the Port of Tacoma’s West Hylebos Log Yard.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has named Michael Nestor to head the agency's Office of Inspector General, an independent body that investigates complaints of misconduct and wrongdoing by port authority employees and vendors. Paul Landry has been appointed to a second three-year term on Port Metro Vancouver’s board of directors.

Transportation Technology Associates
The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority has received 16 responses to its Request for Expressions of Interest in developing three waterfront parcels collectively known as the Southport complex. Puerto Rico will invest $8.7 million for the expansion of Cruise Dock #3 in the Port of San Juan to allow the berthing of cruise ships with accommodations for up to 6,000 passengers.

The Port of San Diego will consider the expansion of its homelessness outreach with two programs after the initial success of efforts to help people living on the streets. The port has partnered with the Alpha Project since January 2014 to conduct interviews and assess the homeless population on the port's waterfront, known as the tidelands.
