The Port of Lake Charles recently installed a new ship unloader crane at its Bulk Terminal No. 1 (BT-1), with an eye to boosting the facility’s cargo capacity and efficiency. The Port of Oakland celebrated the completion of construction of its shore power infrastructure with a ceremony on November 8.

J.A. (Alfonso) Boekhoudt is taking a four-year leave of absence as managing director of the Aruba Ports Authority N.V. following his swearing in November 14 as Minister Plenipotentiary in the Dutch capital city of The Hague. In California, Gary Lee Moore, who has served as Los Angeles city engineer and general manager of the city’s Bureau of Engineering for the past decade, is now interim executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. Longtime AAPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers executive Dave Sanford has been named deputy executive director at Port Manatee following a national search.

Back by popular demand for the seventh year, AAPA’s 2014 Shifting International Trade Routes Workshop will examine the effect of the world economic outlook on investment decisions, cargo movements and international trade in general. The program, sponsored by the AAPA in cooperation with the U.S. Maritime Administration and hosted by the Tampa Port Authority, will be conducted January 23-24, 2014, in Tampa.

Import volume at the top U.S. containerized retail cargo handling container ports grew in October despite the government shutdown and will continue to do so nearly uninterrupted well into 2014, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released November 12 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates. Approximately 28 million metric tons of cargo transited the St. Lawrence Seaway from March 22 to October 31, a drop of 7.0 percent from the corresponding 2012 period, according to data reported by the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

Effective October 1, a new pilot program allows cold treatment products the direct importation of Peruvian fruit via PortMiami. The Tampa Port Authority (TPA) reports Tampa Gateway Rail terminal processed 3,897,189 barrels of ethanol – transported in 5,705 railcars – all within its first year of operation.
