First up is AAPA's 2½-day Port Security Seminar and Exposition, July 17-19 in Baltimore. Now is the time to make plans for AAPA's Port Security Seminar and Exhibition, July 17-19, at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in the vibrant, historic port city of Baltimore. An outstanding program has been developed by the AAPA Security Committee and its chairman, Joe Lawless of the Massachusetts Port Authority, for what will be the association's 13th security seminar since May 2001. Last year's seminar in Miami drew a large and enthusiastic audience; this year's promises to be equally engaging.

Import volume at the largest U.S. containerized retail cargo handling ports should increase 1.1 percent in June, reflecting modest growth expectations as retailers head toward the back-to-school and holiday seasons, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released June 10 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

The Port of Baltimore's Clean Diesel Program reached a major milestone recently, when for the 50th time an older, short-haul dray truck was replaced with a newer, cleaner running version under a program supported by federal and state funds.

Metro Ports is providing stevedore and terminal handling services for Siemens Energy Inc.'s export wind turbine blade projects through the Port of Galveston. Siemens plans to export 246 53-meter blades between May and July 2013.

The Port of Houston, already a major player in the Latin America trade arena, will be included in a new ro/ro service to the West Coast of South America. NYK will launch on July 24. The "NYK Chile Express" offers direct service from the port authority's Turning Basin Terminal to Ecuador, Chile and Peru, countries that already rank among the port's top 15 trading partners.

 The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on June 7 announced the appointment of Al Moro, chief harbor engineer, as the Port of Long Beach's interim executive director, replacing Chris Lytle who has been named chief executive of the Port of Oakland. A few days later, the commissioners selected Dr. Noel Hacegaba, the board's executive officer, to be the port's interim deputy executive director.

The Port of Los Angeles joined Yang Ming on May 30 in signing an agreement extending the ocean carrier's lease with the port for an additional nine years. In conjunction with the lease extension, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Beijing to expand and modernize the Yang Ming terminal facilities at the port. In other news, the port is undertaking an Energy Management Action Plan (E-MAP) initiative designed to improve energy efficiency.

Global Marine Terminals has accepted an $11.4 million TIGER grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant will assist Global Terminals as it completes its ongoing $350 million renovation. The terminal is located on the Bayonne waterfront in the Port of New York & New Jersey and is owned by the port authority. Part of that renovation involves expanding the current 100-acre Global campus onto 70 additional acres in what once were the Greenville rail yards and are now a port authority property.

The ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Port Metro Vancouver are setting draft goals to reduce diesel emissions by 75 percent per ton of cargo by 2015 and 80 percent by 2020. Combined with projected cargo growth, this will result in overall reductions of 70 percent by 2015 and 75 percent by 2020, the ports say. The goals are part of the draft 2013 Update of the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy released June 11.

The California State Lands Commission and the Port of Oakland have closed with Zarsion-OHP I, LLC of Oakland, an entity managed by Signature Development Group (Signature) and Zarsion America, on the Brooklyn Basin project (also known as the "Oak-to-Ninth" project). For more than a decade, the port has been in contract to sell and lease the 64-acre waterfront site.

Port Saint John in May recorded its fifth consecutive month of cargo tonnage increases, most dramatically in the container sector, and 1 percent growth in trade overall compared to the first five months of 2012.

The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports May was its most productive month of 2013, with container throughput at its terminals up 7.2 percent from a year ago to 191,368 TEUs. Exports accounted for 103,217 TEUs (+5.4 percent) and imports for 88,150 TEUs (+9.3 percent). For the year through May, volume totaled 878,412 TEUs, up 6.3 percent from 826,297 TEUs for January-May 2012.
