Tay Yoshitani was elected chairman of the board-elect of the American Association of Port Authorities during the Spring Conference meeting on March 18 of the AAPA Board of Directors. Also during the Spring Conference, AAPA presented Port Person of the Year awards to U.S. Reps. Janice Hahn (D-CA) and Ted Poe (R-TX), co-founders of the bi-partisan Congressional PORTS Caucus. The award honors individuals for their significant contributions to the port industry.

March import volume at top U.S. major retail containerized cargo ports should be up 2.3 percent from a year ago, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released earlier this month by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.

During its meeting of March 14, the Board of Directors of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority elected the following officers: Marc Krantz, chair; Chris Ronayne, vice chair; and Diane Downing, secretary. The appointments are for one-year terms and took effect immediately.

Port of Greater Baton Rouge
U.S.-flag lakers began moving in the Port of Duluth-Superior last week as the 2013 commercial shipping season got underway on the far western edge of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system. The port’s first departure was the Mesabi Miner at 9:30 Wednesday morning, March 20.

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has been included in two revamped Asia-U.S. East Coast service rotations. The G6 Alliance shipping lines (APL, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Orient Overseas Container Line) have expanded their cooperation and added JAXPORT to the new service beginning in May.

Port of Lake Charles Commissioners have approved an option for a long-term lease agreement with Magnolia LNG on 90 acres, where the an Australian-based energy company plans to build a $2.2 billion export facility capable of producing 4.0 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually.

The Port of Long Beach reports a February surge in container traffic, a 36.6 percent increase from a year ago to 530,967 TEUs. That included across-the-board gains for inbound (+46 percent) and outbound (+17.2 percent) loads as well as empties (+44.2 percent). Import volume was the highest it has been for any February since 2007.

The Port of Montreal has won an award for its cruise operations from Cruise Insight magazine for a fifth consecutive year. This year the port took home the prize for Most Efficient Port Services. The award recognizes the port’s efficient combination of port agency and customs services and its strong working relationship with cruise line operations departments.

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans has notified AECOM Technical Services Inc. to begin the design of the port’s Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal project. The port last year received a $16.7 million federal transportation grant for improvements to the Napoleon Avenue Intermodal Terminal. The project site is an existing 12-acre rail yard that services the adjacent Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. The new rail yard will be re-configured and modernized into an intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF).

New York City’s cruise industry generated a total economic impact of nearly $200 million in 2012. The 2012 Economic Impact Study, conducted by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, detailed an increase in passengers of 32 percent since 2009, when the city first began analyzing industry data. These passengers, along with crew, spent more than $120 million in New York City, an increase of more than 30 percent since 2009.

The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners approved two strategic hires on March 14: Amy Tharpe as social responsibility division (SRD) director and Ron Puccinelli as position of chief technology officer (CTO). They will begin work at the Port of Oakland early next month.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority on March 14 welcomed to its Board of Directors Maureen Macarenko, a lifelong Prince Rupert resident and businesswoman with nearly four decades of experience in the shipping and customs industries. As a board member, Ms. Macarenko represents both the City of Prince Rupert and the District of Port Edward, filling a seat designated by the port authority’s letter patent charter for a municipal appointee.

M/V BBC Danube, a newly built, 17,000 dwt multipurpose ship with heavy-lift capabilities, paid a maiden voyage visit March 18 to the South Jersey Port Corporation’s Balzano Marine Terminal in Camden. The ship was carrying equipment for LS Power’s West Deptford Energy Station (WDES) Project.
