M/V BBC Danube, a newly built, 17,000 dwt multipurpose ship with heavy-lift capabilities, paid a maiden voyage visit March 18 to the South Jersey Port Corporation’s Balzano Marine Terminal in Camden. The ship was carrying equipment for LS Power’s West Deptford Energy Station (WDES) Project.

The company is building natural gas-fueled combined cycle power station on property located in West Deptford (NJ).  Scheduled for completion in 2014, the 738 megawatt plant will be able to provide power for more than 700,000 homes in Delaware and southern New Jersey.

Arrangements had been made to barge the power plant equipment to the site, about 9.5 miles down the Delaware River from Balzano terminal. This will include two gas turbine generators, one steam turbine generator, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam condenser, and three generating step-up transformers. Transfer of the equipment between ship and barge will occur at Balzano Marine Terminal. The WDES project is located just north of the site of the port corporation’s future Paulsboro Marine Terminal.
