Port container traffic volumes within the area encompassed by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) reached a record high in 2016 of approximately 60.2 million TEUs. That was up 1.1 percent from the previous record year of 2015 and exceeded the box count of two decades ago by 118 percent.

A second consecutive record year is shaping up at the Port of Longview where first quarter 2017 cargo throughput jumped 46 percent from a year ago to 2.4 million metric tons, or 31 percent of the projected year-end total.
 
 
   
To accommodate Baltimore’s burgeoning container trade, the Maryland Port Administration (MPA) recently purchased a 70-acre property located right behind the Seagirt Marine Terminal.
 
The Port of Virginia will allocate grant awards totaling $1 million to eight Virginia localities to upgrade their local ports and waterfront parks, repair and maintain local maritime assets and spur waterfront development.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $1.17 billion fiscal year FY 2017/18 budget for the Port of Los Angeles that focuses on infrastructure improvements, supply chain efficiency, financial performance and stakeholder engagement. The Port of Palm Beach reports net operating revenues reached a 10-year high in FY 2015/16 of $16.6 million, thanks mainly to increases in wharfage and dockage revenue.
 
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on May 22 awarded community sponsorships totaling $372,500 to 136 organizations. The program helps the port educate and engage the public about its role in international trade and highlight its dedication to social responsibility.
