More than 100 port industry professionals gathered in Vancouver (BC) September 14-15 for AAPA’s second Energy & Environment Seminar. Port executives, environmental managers, business development professionals and service providers convened to hear from experts on a variety of energy and environmental topics of interest to ports of the Western Hemisphere.
 
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has appointed Duane Kenagy, P.E., interim chief executive officer of the Port of Long Beach. He will serve until a successor is found to Jon Slangerup, who announced his resignation as CEO on September 8. Michael W. Kearney, president and owner of a New Orleans-based third-party logistics company, is the newly elected chair of the board of commissioners of the Port of New Orleans. Nick Demerice has joined the Northwest Seaport Alliance as head of its public affairs team. Gaétan Boivin, chief executive officer of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority, earlier this month announced the appointment of Claudie Gagnon to the newly created position of director of sustainable development.
 
Port Corpus Christi Commissioners on September 20 adopted a resolution approving a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District for work provided or performed prior to execution of a project partnership agreement for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel - Channel Improvement Project. The MOU allows for in-kind contributions by Port Corpus Christi for sediment testing services associated with dredging the entrance channel ahead of a Project Partnership Agreement.

Port Tampa Bay’s board of commissioners has approved a reduction in the port authority’s FY 2016-17-millage rate to $0.1450 per $1,000 valuation. This means a Hillsborough County resident who owns a home valued at $150,000 coupled with a $50,000 homestead exemption will pay $14.50 annually in port-related property taxes.
 
 
   
The Port of Los Angeles | Security earlier this month swore in two new officers, Miguel Cueva and Matthew O’Keefe, both of whom earned top honors at the Los Angeles Police Academy. The addition of Officers Cueva and O’Keefe continues the Port Police’s efforts to hire diverse and qualified officers in order to ensure the safety and security of the nation’s busiest container port. Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) conducted a successful oil spill response exercise in Nanaimo Harbor from September 20 to 21.
 
 
   
The 2016 Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards announced by Cruise Critic lists the Port of Halifax as one of the top five Canada-U.S. cruise destinations.
 
 
   
Night gates are here to stay at the Port of Oakland’s busiest marine terminal. Oakland International Container Terminal will make evening operations permanent following a successful three-month trial. The port predicts night gates will continue to relieve pressure on daytime operations. The Port of Virginia has signed a new, long-term lease for Virginia International Gateway (VIG). The deal clears the way for doubling the capacity of the deep-water container terminal.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports container throughput last month at the Port of Savannah set an August record of 330,846 TEUs, a 5 percent increase compared to August 2015 and the third highest monthly total in GPA history. The Northwest Seaport Alliance reports container volumes at its Tacoma and Seattle terminals increased last month, giving the alliance its best August since 2012. The yearlong rally in containerized exports at the Port of Oakland continued in August, with the TEU count up 7 percent from August 2015. It was the seventh increase in eight months.
