Admin/Legal Program Focused on Anticipating and Avoiding Risks

Attendees at the AAPA Port Administration and Legal Issues Seminar held February 12-13 in Ft. Lauderdale learned about how to protect their ports in a variety of ways, from creating proactive human resources policies and developing risk management strategies to developing sensible document retention policies and addressing cybersecurity.

At the suggestion of the AAPA Law Review Committee, a new session was added on rail issues including rail access and projects and federal preemption. Other topics included dredging and environmental issues; structuring lease provisions; Shipping Act regulation; chassis pools, demurrage and other port charges; and longshore and labor issues.

We appreciated the hospitality of our host, Port Everglades, and our sponsors Anderson Kill, Baker Wotring LLP, Dial Cordy and Associates, Inc., EA Engineering, Science, and Technology Inc., K&L Gates LLP, Kelley Drye, Lewis, Longman & Walker, P.A., Nossaman, LLP, Saul Ewing Arnstein Lehr LLP, and Thompson Coburn LLP for their generous support of the event.

Presentations and handouts are available on the AAPA website.
