Baltimore: Containers, General Cargo Tons Set Records in FY 2017

Fiscal 2017 was a banner year for containers and general cargo traffic at the Port of Baltimore’s public marine terminals. As reported by the Maryland Port Administration (MPA), the box count for the year ending June 30 reached an all-time high of 907,957 TEUs, up 4.5 percent from the port’s previous record, 868,875 TEUs in FY 2015-16.  This June’s 87,565 TEUs set a monthly record for the Port of Baltimore.

It was also the second consecutive record year for general cargo – 10,347,794 tons, up 5.7 percent from last year’s 9,787,011 tons. General cargo includes cars, containerized goods, farm and construction machinery, forest products and break breakbulk. General cargo throughput totaled 897,871 tons in June and set a calendar year first half record of 5,324,178 tons.

Business at the port generates about 13,650 direct jobs, while more than 127,000 jobs in Maryland are linked to port activities. The port is responsible for nearly $3 billion in individual wages and salary and more than $310 million in state and local tax revenues.

The MPA recently announced the purchase of 70 acres of land near Seagirt Marine Terminal to be used for additional cargo opportunities, including containers.
