Port Corpus Christi Earns "StormReady Community" Recognition

The Port of Corpus Christi has been recognized as a "StormReady Community" by the National Weather Service.

StormReady helps communities plan for all types of severe weather—from tornadoes to tsunamis. The program encourages communities to take a proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations by providing emergency managers with clear-cut guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.

To be designated StormReady, the port had to establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center, have multiple ways to receive notifications and alert the public of severe weather warnings and forecasts, and create a system that monitors weather conditions locally.  It was also required to promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars, develop a formal hazardous weather plan that includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises, and to pass an on-side inspection by the National Weather Service & State Emergency Manager.

"Port Corpus Christi employees and partners take weather very seriously. Our region is prone to severe weather throughout the year," said Danielle Hale, the port’s manager of emergency management. Through increased awareness and enhanced decision making support, we are ensuring safe and uninterrupted commerce whenever possible.  This recognition clearly shows our commitment to preparedness and the excellent work of our team."

The port’s StormReady designation is valid for three years through July 27, 2020.
