North Carolina: Sea-Land Beefs Up Latin America Services at Port of Wilmington

SeaLand, the Maersk’s Group’s Intra-Americas regional ocean carrier, is bringing its new Atlantico service to the Port of Wilmington. Atlantico will complement the revised SeaLand SAE service, which already calls the North Carolina port.

The Atlantico offers weekly service between the U.S. East Coast and the ports of Veracruz and Altamira in Mexico.  Ten days is the company’s advertised transit time from Wilmington to Altamira. The service is seen as a competitive alternative to ground transport between the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition, the revised SeaLand SAE service offers Wilmington port users transshipment opportunities via Manzanillo in Panama, and Freeport in the Bahamas.

"These new and improved services offer our customers greater access to an emerging market," said Paul J. Cozza, executive director of the North Carolina State Ports Authority (SPA). "Specifically, the apparel trade and the producers and exporters of perishable goods will be direct beneficiaries."

The Port of Wilmington Cold Storage (PWCS) facility, which is set to open this summer, will support SeaLand’s services by providing additional capacity for the region’s refrigerated foods market. According to the ports authority, PWCS will offer convenience, logistical support, expandable storage, reduced spoilage, expedited delivery times and potentially substantial transportation cost savings.

In addition, the SPA is moving forward with a $100 million investment in infrastructure improvements, including, new cranes, an enhanced berth, and a wider turning basin. This summer, the Port of Wilmington will be ready to handle post-Panamax vessels of up to the 10,000-TEU capacity.
