AAHOA News

In the wake of its recent announcement that President & CEO Cecil P. Staton and Executive Vice President & COO Rachel Humphrey would be stepping down from the association, AAHOA announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Ken Greene to serve as Interim President & CEO. “We are confident [Ken's] experience, relationships, and extensive knowledge and appreciation of the industry are the perfect fit to serve in this capacity as AAHOA Members continue down the road to recovery,” AAHOA Chairman Biran Patel said. Prior to joining AAHOA, Greene served as a global leader of many iconic hotel brands, including President, Americas for Radisson Hotel Group, President & CEO for Delta Hotels and Resorts, in various roles at Cendant Corporation, and Wyndham Worldwide and many of its divisions. He also recently founded Greenehouse Consulting, which focuses on acquisitions, management, and advisory services to the hospitality industry.

IRC Section 1031 (Like-Kind Exchange) provides hoteliers across the country with an efficient and fair way to transition into new properties and, in the process, continue to contribute to their communities. As a concerned hotelier, you have the opportunity to sign a letter that will be sent to both of your U.S. senators and your member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The letter emphasizes how important Like-Kind Exchanges are to your way of life and how destructive the elimination of these exchanges would be to local economies during this emerging economic recovery. AAHOA Members, please take a moment to sign your name and have the letter sent to the elected officials who will decide whether to preserve this critical lifeline for hoteliers. Your voice is needed to protect Section 1031, so let it be heard!

Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “On a 2-year run-rate, RevPAR was down 19.7% vs. down 5.7% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate and somewhat closer to the -27% to -33% range we saw throughout much of the springtime. Assuming continued pent-up leisure and a rising trickle of professional corporate demand today, it is possible that the -27% to -33% range vs. 2019 RevPAR is no longer applicable. The calendar shift of Memorial Day (5/31/21 vs. 5/25/20 and 5/27/19) also makes for noisy comparisons. Versus both 2019 and 2020, we view pent-up demand to travel for this year’s holiday as particularly strong. On a two-year comparison looking day by day over the full week, RevPAR change flipped positive for the limited-service branded hotels by last Friday night. Friday/Saturday RevPAR growth vs. 2019 was ~ +7-8% on Friday and Saturday nights for Economy and Midscale hotels. For the full week, Upscale RevPAR was +134.0% and -30.8% over 2 years; Upper Midscale was +109.4% and -13.6% over 2 years.”
