In the Market

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Upper Upscale (+0.2%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Midscale was the weakest at -3.0%. Last week’s results presented clean-comp trends largely similar to other clean-comp weeks over the past two months – and that trend is flat to slightly down RevPAR. Occupancy was down in all chain scales. ADR was modestly positive on the headline (+0.4%), supported by Independents (ADR +1.1%) and Upper Upscale (+1.4%). Group had relatively superior performance vs. Transient last week and that variance contributed to Upper Upscale ADR growth.” For more, read the full report. Hotel Tech Report has initiated a program to rate hotel software vendors. With better customer service comes less downtime for software upgrades and fewer unused software features.

Mentoring is often associated with academia or trades requiring specific skill sets. The hospitality industry requires so many different roles it would seem mentoring wouldn't have a place in hotels. However, since the industry is seeing a lack of available skilled labor, mentoring could be the way to get the high-quality employees many hoteliers are seeking.

When hotel groups have many soft brands, or even one brand with multiple locations, finding the correct design for each location can be difficult. Accor has found the path to design success: one brand, one identity, one design. Accor takes one design concept and applies it to each of its 33 brands in a way that makes sense for the particular brand and also fits with the overall group aesthetic.
