In a testament to the invaluable connection between elected officials and the hospitality industry, AAHOA Vice Chairman Miraj Patel recently hosted U.S. Congressman Brian Babin for an insightful Back-of-the-House tour at Extended Stay America Suites – Baytown in Baytown, TX.

During the Back-of-the-House tour, Congressman Babin received a firsthand look at hotel operations within his district and gained a deeper understanding of the efforts made by hoteliers to create jobs, boost the local economy, and enhance the overall travel experience for visitors.

“Despite Congressman Babin’s busy schedule, his visit and genuine interest in understanding the history of the lodging industry's first and next generations, along with the hotel owner's perspective on critical issues like staffing, property tax, and insurance concerns, empower us to educate decision-makers and drive positive change in the hospitality industry,” Patel shared.

Congressman Babin serves the residents of the 36th Congressional District of Texas. Located in southeast Texas, the 36th District includes Newton, Jasper, Tyler, Polk, Orange, Hardin, Liberty, and Chambers counties, as well as portions of southeastern Harris County. In a significant demonstration of the industry's influence within Congressman Babin's district, AAHOA hosted the largest regional gathering of the year in the Southeast Texas region. With an impressive turnout of over 380 attendees, the Southeast Regional event underscored the considerable impact and strength of hospitality in the very heart of Congressman Babin's constituency.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reached out to AAHOA's very own Young Professional Director Eastern Division Dylan Patel, CHO, for his perspective on the hospitality industry. Dylan shared his key insights on the recent jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor and what it means for Georgia and the industry at large.

"Even with the recent pick-up in travel and bookings, many of the state's hotels cannot rent out all their rooms," Dylan shared in the article. "I still think there's a huge shortage of workers. In many places, we don't have enough housekeeping workers. We just don't have enough people to clean those rooms."

On Tuesday, November 14, Ohio State Senator and AAHOA Member Niraj Antani (R-6) announced a campaign for Congress in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District. Sen. Antani is the first Hindu and Indian American State Senator in Ohio history, as well as the youngest Hindu and Indian American state or federal elected official in the United States.

Sen. Antani would also become the youngest Hindu and Indian American Member of Congress in the nation's history and the first Republican Hindu Member of Congress in the country's history.

Born and raised in Southern Ohio, Sen. Antani is serving his first term in the Ohio Senate, having previously served three terms as State Representative in the Ohio House of Representatives. He has received numerous awards from organizations for veterans, community colleges, small businesses, and more.

Sen. Antani is also an AAHOA Member in the North Central Region under North Central Regional Director Bhavesh N. Patel. The presence of an AAHOA Member in a prominent public office highlights the robust connections that this association maintains with elected officials, underscoring the substantial contributions made by AAHOA Members not only to the American economy but also to the American government, thereby benefiting its people.

The LA City Council read for the first time a revised ordinance that would require police permits for hotels. The ordinance also included other measures, such as a Voluntary Housing Program that would place unhoused individuals in vacant guest rooms at hotels on a volunteer basis. AAHOA sent a letter to the LA City Council, as well as a memo strongly supporting the proposal for the Voluntary Housing Program (for unhoused individuals), expressing concerns regarding the police permitting sections, and asking the City Council to send this section back to the Committee.

At the council meeting on Tuesday, November 29, AAHOA Members made their stance clear. Despite Councilmember John Lee's motion to bifurcate the ordinance, specifically by sending the permitting section back to the committee, this effort was met with objection by the Council President. Nevertheless, Councilman Lee acknowledged and commended AAHOA’s tireless efforts in protecting hotel owners, a significant number of whom are minority and immigrant hoteliers.

“We feel we have the Councilmember's support. The LA City Council definitely heard and saw us,” Rachel Stone, AAHOA Director of State Government Affairs Western Region, shared.

"AAHOA is just a major help to any hotelier. It doesn't even have to be an Asian American, even though that's our primary audience. But even without that, AAHOA is always just always trying to meet with state representatives or House officials, no matter who it is. They're always putting the best effort and that's honestly more than a lot of people can say. So just having the backing of an organization behind you is a huge help."

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -0.6% y/y for the week ending 11/25/2023, per STR, below the prior week's result of +6.3%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +2.9%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +18.7%, below the prior week’s result of +27.2%, and similar to the trailing 10-week average of +18.6%.  Last week included Thanksgiving in the 2019 and 2022 comparisons as well as 2023; last week was a clean comp. We view results negatively impacted by the higher mix of the relatively underperforming leisure segment, particularly reflected in Economy RevPAR (-5.9% y/y), Resort (-0.6%), and Luxury ADR (-5.1%). Upscale RevPAR: -0.4% y/y and +16.8% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -1.7% y/y and +20.2% vs. 2019.”
