AAHOA is excited to have once again participated in this year's Lodging Conference, which took place September 18-21 in sunny Phoenix, AZ, at the Marriott Pheonix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

For more than 28 years, the Lodging Conference has brought together the hotel industry's most influential owners, presidents, CEOs, and investors to strategize about the latest trends in the hospitality industry.

The AAHOA Officers were also able to share their experience and insights through various panels throughout the conference, including the following:
  • Channel Management, Distribution, and GoPAR to Grow Your Bottom Line
  • Owners, Brands, and Management Companies: On the Same Page?
  • The Rise of Third-Party Management and How it is Affecting the Industry
  • From the CEO's Perspective
  • Leaders in Hospitality
  • Tech Talk: Real-World Solutions for Your Hotels
The AAHOA VIP reception on Tuesday, Setpember 19, was an excellent opportunity to catch up with fellow members and industry leaders. As the conference comes to a close today, AAHOA is proud to have attended and taken part in the networking, education, and experience that is The Lodging Conference. We're grateful for the leadership of Harry Javer and his team for producing this year's historical event.

This week, in a bold stance, AAHOA called out Big Lodging for publishing a misleading and false narrative involving alleged "problems" with the New Jersey Franchise bill A1958, which would hold franchisors accountable and supports AAHOA’s four core pillars of franchise advocacy to reform rules for mandated vendors, rebates, loyalty programs, and new fees.

AAHOA cites to the specific provisions of the New Jersey franchise legislation to "set the record straight" and stop the disharmony arising from the spread of untrue assertions. Instead of asserting spurious and untrue statements, AAHOA calls on Big Lodging to join in collaborating on how to strengthen the industry and ensure fairness for all.

In early September, AAHOA Alabama Regional Director Sanjay Patel and AAHOA Member Viral Patel had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Katie Britt in Tuscaloosa, AL, to discuss critical economic issues at the national and state levels. The meeting touched upon the Department of Labor's proposed overtime rule and its potential impact on hotel businesses.

The proposed regulation would require employers to pay overtime to salaried workers who are in executive, administrative, and professional roles but make less than $1,059 a week or $55,068 a year for full-time employees. That salary threshold is up from the $35,568 level that has been in place since 2019, when the Trump administration raised it from $23,660.

Senator Katie Britt has a demonstrated history of support for AAHOA. Two years ago, she attended an AAHOA women's event in Birmingham, driven by a phone call from a local Ambassador. During that event, Senator Britt spent over an hour with AAHOA women hoteliers, engaging in meaningful conversations about her vision for supporting Alabama businesses.

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
AAHOA, in coordination with a diverse coalition of business and trade associations, attended a Los Angeles Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. After introducing themselves and thanking the Board, AAHOA and coalition members testified how the "Tourism Worker Minimum Wage Ordinance" would have adversely impacted their business (e.g., hotel rate increases, employee layoffs);  many hotels are limited-service, owned by small families, who are also persons of color. AAHOA and the coalition also shared cost of living concerns in the Greater Los Angeles Area. They communicated the desire to work with the county to find solutions for everyone. AAHOA and the coalition also asked the county to consider including a total economic impact study in future tourism worker minimum wage ordinances.

This proactive in-person advocacy demonstrates AAHOA's strong presence in Los Angeles, California. In addition to expressing his gratitude and concerns, AAHOA Greater Los Angeles Area Regional Director Naresh (ND) Bhakta testified that "AAHOA members own 1,185 of Los Angeles hotels, directly impacts over 165,000 Los Angeles jobs, and contributes $17 billion to the Los Angeles local GDP." AAHOA looks forward to building relationships with local government officials to find equitable solutions for businesses and workers.

Congressman Buddy Carter, who represents Georgia's 1st Congressional District, visited an AAHOA Member-owned hotel in Savannah, Georgia, where he engaged in a Back-of-the-House Tour of the property and discussed top priority issues with local hoteliers. The tour included critical areas of the hotel, including the laundry facilities, kitchen, and meeting rooms.

AAHOA Young Professional Director Eastern Division Dylan Patel led the tour alongside dedicated member Kal Patel and the hotel's staff. They highlighted the hotel's diverse facilities and services and provided insights into the daily operations and the challenges confronting hoteliers in the region.

“Congressman Carter used to work at a hotel himself and has a great appreciation for all that we and our staff do to maintain and manage our properties efficiently," Dylan Patel said. "Additionally, he was familiar with the property already as we host the Chamber of Commerce meetings at the hotel."

During the visit, AAHOA presented Congressman Carter with a PAC check to support legislative efforts critical to the association and its members.

"As a newcomer to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) Upper Midwest Regional Conference & Trade Show, I felt deeply honored and exhilarated by the warm reception extended to me by its leadership Bharat Patel. AAHOA stands as the world's largest association for hotel owners, with its members boasting ownership of more than half of all hotels in the United States. Given my current pursuit in the realm of hotel ownership, I find immense value in having an association like AAHOA that provides guidance and support along this intricate journey. #AAHOA"
