The West Virginia Forestry Association (WVFA) recently held its annual meeting at Canaan Valley Resort & Conference Center with over 250 attending the event at the completely renovated and quite luxurious park-hotel. This year's meeting began Thursday morning with the wood-preservation seminar and afternoon gatherings by the SFI Committee and a Stewardship Seminar, followed that evening with the Board of Directors meeting. More attendees joined their friends on Friday to take part in WVFA events: a golf tournament, skeet shoot and horseshoe tournament. An outdoor family barbecue and chair-lifts to mountain-top views wrapped up the day's events. Saturday's activities included the Junior Forester event for the children, craft sessions for spouses and lumberjack events for everyone who was feeling competitive.

B.T. Humphreys Logging of Lewisburg has been selected as the 2014 West Virginia Logger of the Year. WVFA presents this award annually to recognize the outstanding work of logging professionals in West Virginia. Nominating foresters were Wes Johnson and Bill Dempsey, both of Plum Creek. B.T. Humphreys Logging was selected, after having been awarded 2014 Region 2 Logger of the Year. Johnson and Dempsey say their candidate goes above and beyond the required logging regulations and strives to leave the land in better condition than they found it. Their mission is to be the best at what they do.

B.T. Humphreys Logging began operations in 2002 and produces of five to six loads per day. The operation is a team effort and the entire crew - four men in woods and two truck drivers - was on hand at the WVFA Annual Meeting to accept the award. The logging crew sorts veneer, high-grade and low-grade saw-logs, peelers, locust posts and pulpwood. Brian Humphreys, the owner/operator, serves in an appointed position on the WV DOF BMP Compliance appeals board.
