The Alliance for Telecommunication Industry Solutions (ATIS) Network Reliability Steering Committee (NRSC), in conjunction with NENA, APCO, and NASNA, recently announced the first deliverable from a joint initiative to improve PSAP notification in the event of a service outage. Service Providers: Outage Reporting Structure and Potential Types of 9-1-1 Outages provides recommendations for standardized content and delivery which will help reduce confusion associated with notifications independent of the service provider type. The report will be available in early June.
"NENA is enthused at these significant improvements to the wireless service outage notification process and at the collaborative spirit of the public safety and industry organizations involved," said NENA CEO Brian Fontes. "This effort gives PSAPs and telecommunicators access to clear, standardized information on service outages; a result that will undoubtedly save lives and improve 9-1-1."

As the country continues to advance emergency communications with the implementation of Next Generation 9-1-1, it is critical for 9-1-1 industry stakeholders to have access to a thorough compilation of NG9-1-1-related standards. While the Program is not a standard-setting body, it collaborates with over 40 different standards development organizations (SDOs) to catalog and describe such standards. The seventh edition of the Next Generation 911 Standards Identification and Review is now available. This compilation of NG9-1-1 standards contains criteria that can serve as the basis to achieve 911 interoperability across multiple jurisdictions.
With this document, 9-1-1 leaders have access to a robust list of standards that will support informed decisions for an effective transition to NG9-1-1. This document helps to:
