In 2009, global electricity consumption reached 4.3 GWh with an estimated value of 470 000 €. A significant percentage of electricity consumption is attributed to lighting motorways and tunnels, with the largest energy consumer in Portugal being the Auto–Estradas Norte Litoral junction of the A27 motorway (connecting Porto and Carminha, 88 km) and A28 motorway (connecting Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima, 21 km). This area consumes 340 MWh from 291 lighting points.

Enlight (www.enlight.pt), based in Porto, Portugal specializes in lighting energy efficiency. The company helped Auto-Estradas Notre Litoral understand their energy problem and adherence to the EN13201 standard, which defines relevant international standards for road and street lighting. In this case, EN13201 dictates that even with a dimming schedule, the volume of the vehicle necessitates a certain minimum level of luminance.
