IPRA Today

Illinois Park and Recreation

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Thanks to all who have already renewed. A quick reminder, to take advantage of the early bird savings you need to have your renewal postmarked by December 9.

Additionally, the IPRA team is putting the final touches on the new IPRA website that will launch by January 1, 2012. We hope you will find the new website easier to navigate and full of beneficial resources and information to help you in your job and as you grow as a professional. We look forward to your feedback to ensure we are communicating what you want to know.

Section elections will take place the week of December 5, so make sure to cast your vote to select the member that you feel can best lead and represent your specific professional development needs. I also want to make sure that everyone is aware that there is no additional cost to join multiple sections. We want to encourage you to participate in all areas of interest to help you gain the knowledge and network you are seeking. If you would like to add a section to your profile, please email Sheila Mulvey-Tatoris.

A Member Satisfaction Survey will be emailed to you the week of December 5 from the University of Illinois Office of Recreation and Park Resources. Please participate in this survey, which will help IPRA target its resources to meet our members’ needs and expectations. The survey results will be available in time for the conference, and we plan to share a snapshot of the results with our members.

Make sure you check out the 2012 Education Calendar!

Lastly, I want to let you know that Mike Selep has accepted the assistant director position with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association. His last official work day with IPRA is January 2. However, we plan to keep him involved with the CPRP and CPRE training course and other member involvement opportunities. I have appreciated Mike’s support during my first year at IPRA, and I hope you will join me in congratulating him in his new role.

Thanks again for your suggestions and support. I look forward to continuing to partner with each of you to create a successful IPRA.

Best,
Jan Arnold, executive director, Illinois Park and Recreation Association

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
All of our mission statements have a common theme:
  • Improve the quality of life
  • Protect and preserve the environment
  • Create opportunities for your diverse population
  • Provide memorable and enjoyable experiences
  • Provide safe programs and facilities
  • Be fiscally responsible

I challenge you this holiday season to step back and look at all you have given to people this year as you strive to accomplish your mission.

Just to name a few:
  • Improved physical and mental health for all ages
  • Youth development
  • Stronger communities
  • Safe neighborhoods
  • Building cultural diversity and harmony
  • Providing opportunities for people with disabilities
  • Providing recreation opportunities and open space for lower income families

There is no other profession that has the ability to touch so many people in a positive manner. Over the past few years, you have persevered through tough economic times – everyone in the field is doing more with less. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed!

I thank you for your dedication to sharing your time, energy and resources to make your communities healthier and happier places. It is your commitment that carves out special memories in people’s lives. While it is often tiring and stressful, I encourage you to look at the end product and the endless opportunities you create to impact people for the future. You are giving a gift everyday by serving in our profession. With that, I simply want to say: Thank you.

I wish you and your family a very happy holiday season!

LoriKay Paden, academic advisor, Recreation, Sport and Tourism
