We will discuss the increasingly complex expectations of parents who push for higher levels of coaching, better facilities and resources while fun and sportsmanship is diminished as the emphasis of winning and higher levels of competition increases. The forum will be a great opportunity for athletic directors, superintendents, executive directors and even commissioners to learn about important research showing the many benefits of emphasizing fun, good sportsmanship, teamwork and lifelong participation versus trying to produce the next star athlete.

Who Should Attend? Athletic Directors, Superintendents, Executive Directors and Community Leaders

Presented By:

  • Dr. Skye Arthur-Banning, Community Sport Management, Clemson University. Dr. Arthur-Banning has worked on various programming and sportsmanship initiatives, teaches about outcome-based programming in community recreation programs, offers seminars for parents and coaches on ethical behavior in sport and focuses on reducing obesity through increased sport participation as well as having provided several key note addresses to recreation agencies and state and national organizations around the US and Canada. In addition, Dr. Arthur-Banning officiates professional and NCAA Soccer and brings those program experiences to the presentation.
  • Dr. Mary Sara Wells, Community Recreation and Youth Development, University of Utah. Dr. Wells has been researching sportsmanship issues in youth sport for the past nine years. She has presented at many national and regional conferences about the benefits of recreation programming, sportsmanship and obesity. She continues to work with various county recreation programs across the country to evaluate program effectiveness and participation.
