The key to self management is understanding not only our strengths and weaknesses but understanding how to ensure our strengths do not become overpowering and unproductive. Member Matters

The Gala Committee exists to work with the HRMAM staff to create and assist in implementing the annual Excellence in Leadership Awards. The purpose of the Awards is to showcase outstanding Human Resource achievements in Manitoba. The awards honour employers and individuals who are leaders in diversity, development, impact and innovation. The event also provides networking opportunities and generates revenue for the association.

Responsibilities 

 

  • Determine the strategic direction of the event. This includes the creation of the theme as well as providing input on pricing and the program.
  • Encourage individuals and organizations to submit applications and assist applicants in the completion of forms where requested.
  • Provide leads to staff for potential sponsors. Committee members will receive material from HRMAM for distribution.
  • Committee members may be asked to provide input on event logistics. There are a small number of volunteer opportunities at the event itself.
  • Debrief the event including reviewing the attendee survey.
Time Commitment
Time commitment will vary however, in general committee members will be required to attend one meeting per month (1-2 hours) as well as up to approximately 5 hours per month of committee work.

In the news...
In Nelson v. 977372 Ontario Inc., an employer who refused to issue a record of employment (ROE) to a terminated employee and also withheld that employee’s vacation pay and final wages was ordered to pay punitive damages to the employee in addition to damages for wrongful dismissal. Last year, two class action certification decisions - McCracken v. Canadian National Railway Company and Brown v. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce - provided much needed comfort to employers facing the daunting prospect of employee class action litigation. However, two more recent decisions serve as a warning that employers can still be exposed to class actions when their policies that apply to all employees are under fire. Read more here. 
 
Research shows four out of 10 workers disengaged globally. In the U.S., the situation is worse. According to the latest State of the American Workplace Report, 70 percent of U;.S. workers don't like their job, creating an environment where many workers are emotionally disconnected from their workplace and less productive than engaged counterparts. Read more here.
 
Losing a job can be a traumatic experience. When my first contract role ended while working in Jerusalem in my early twenties, I quickly created new business cards, called myself a freelancer and started knocking on the doors of editors I met in the area. One asked where I currently worked and when I explained I was freelance, he retorted, "So, you're unemployed." The description stung.  Read more here.
