90-Day Public Review Announcement

The draft of the ADCI Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations, 6th Ed., is still available for public review. The 6th Edition Draft, Introduction to the 6th Edition Draft, and Gap Analysis between the 5th and 6th Editions can be accessed and downloaded from the Underwater magazine website, www.underwatermagazine.com. The review process is open to all industry stakeholders.

The official dates of the review period are 25 September - 25 December 2010.

The Association would like to thank everyone who has taken the opportunity to submit comments.

Ben Miller – acknowledging Ben Miller’s significant contributions to the commercial diving industry, specifically as a world-renowned helmet, mask, harness, and weight belt manufacturer.

Tom Angel – significant contributions to the commercial diving industry, specifically as one of the founding members of the Association of Diving Contractors and being instrumental in the introduction of saturation diving to the Gulf of Mexico. Participation in "Project 600" demonstrated the practicality of saturation diving as it applies to the oil field, as well as setting a world record for open sea diving at the time.

Joe Sanford – acknowledging the groundbreaking formation of the first Gulf Coast Diving Contractor that carried insurance, Sanford Brothers Diving, as well as the formation of Morgan City Rentals.

Interested in contributing to UnderWater magazine?

UnderWater magazine is seeking feature stories and photography covering subjects of broad significance to the commercial diving industry. Possible article topics include, but are not limited to: safety, new techniques, new equipment, equipment reviews, recent projects, etc. Special attention will be given to articles highlighting safety; however, all topics of general interest to diving contractors will be considered. Photography accompanying your story is welcome and encouraged.

It was decided to ask for the support of our industry as a whole, given the significance of Dan Wilson's lifelong work. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is excited about creating a special display with Purisima to supplement existing diving and early offshore oil industry exhibits.

All of us were excited about the possibility of ADCI membership sponsoring this unique display that will honor our industry and a man who dared to "think outside of the box." Additionally, the display will be a significant representation of ADCI and commercial diving for tourists and visitors at the museum.

Wreckage discovered at the bottom of the Oswego River by two local shipwreck hunters could be a rare piece of New York’s history. Using sonar technology, Jim Kennard and Roger Pawlowski in October found the original Erie Canal boat in the mud and sediment just south of Fulton, Oswego County.

The white outline on the map shows the operating area where both Indonesian Research Vessel Baruna Jaya IV and NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer conducted joint operations in 2010. The expedition focused on the diversity and distribution of deep sea habitats and marine life in unknown ocean areas in SATAL – a contraction of Sangihe and Talaud – two island chains stretching northeast of North Sulawesi in Indonesia.

The bacteria are of particular interest because they may shed light on the mechanism by which rusticles form, and thus on the general "recycling" that such microbes carry out on submerged metal structures.
That, the authors point out, has relevance also to the protection of offshore oil and gas pipelines, and the safe disposal at sea of ships and oil rigs.

Shell announced an agreement to sell a group of gas fields in South Texas to OXY USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corp., for approximately $1.8 billion, effective January 1, 2011. The sale is a further step in Shell’s ongoing portfolio restructuring and focus on capital efficiency.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Galveston and Texas City celebrated transition and expansion Monday at two separate ceremonies. In Texas City, Coast Guard officials established the Marine Safety Unit of Texas City, changing the name of the unit after three years of operating on the mainland as the Marine Safety Unit of Galveston.

NEW PRODUCTS AND TECHNOLOGY
Underwater Remote-Operated Vehicles, or ROVs, are used extensively in the oil and gas industry, in undersea engineering projects and, more glamorously, for doing things like exploring the wreck of the Titanic. These unmanned submersibles are linked to a surface support ship with a thick, cumbersome tether, which is used to pipe power down to the ROV as well as for communications. At the Future of Electric Vehicles conference, however, a new technology was presented that almost sets the ROVs free – the Spider Optics system.

The second watch Vittorium announced is this piece called the Deep Diver. This is meant to be their truer dive watch – even though it does have some design features that would prevent it from being a true professional diving instrument. However, on that note, Vittorium will offer versions of the Deep Diver with much increased water resistance. This Deep Diver is 200 meters water resistant, and information from Vittorium indicates the Deep Diver will soon be able to dive much deeper.
