Steel tariffs - we want your feedback

Is your company affected by newly imposed tariffs?

On October 11 the Government of Canada issued notice to importers of steel goods advising them of safeguards in the form of tariff rate quotas for certain steel goods that are listed in item 82 on the Import Control List. While this tariff was in retaliation to the negotiations between Canada and the U.S., we believe these safeguarding measures are actually harming Canadian businesses.

The WRLA is currently working on an action plan as we need to tell Ottawa politicians and public servants that the safeguarding quotas will be filled quickly, and the permit process as currently designed is unfair. Roll formers who must pay the 25% tax will be unable to sustain the consequent losses, and the companies that are not required to pay the taxes will be able to keep their pricing low. The former is in danger of serious financial losses or bankruptcy while the latter will prosper. We believe a flat tax would be a fairer approach for all business.

Take action:

If your business is impacted by these safeguarding tariffs, please contact Liz Kovach at 204-770-2416 or lkovach@wrla.org.

We are collecting information for WRLA member businesses so that we can identify the scope of the impact because this will influence our proposed action plan.
