Making Friends with the Mind, Texas-style

North Texas LinkUp with Elizabeth Lyons at Talus: Mindfulness for the Busy Professional, Dec. 9, 2021

North Texas Chapter LinkUp: Mindfulness for the Busy Professional
Sponsored by Talus Pay

By Lacey Frenzel, Director of Product and Partner Development, First American by Deluxe

On December 9th, the North Texas Chapter joyfully gathered at Talus Pay’s North Dallas office to hear Elizabeth Lions, Executive Career Coach and President of Lionsology, talk about “Making Friends with the Mind.” Kim Fitzsimmons, CEO, and the Talus Pay team graciously provided hors d'oeuvres and beverages in their beautiful new, bright office.

Elizabeth’s topic of mindfulness was timely during the holiday season. Between burn out, working from home and the holidays, it is easy to get caught up in your thoughts and let them consume you. Often women in payments, in general, can be very hard on themselves or overachievers, so this topic was insightful.

Elizabeth talked about how mindfulness is more than just meditating or being present. As we listened, our minds opened to a new concept – that is it is possible to witness your thoughts, just as you watch a movie. Elizabeth emphasized what her teacher taught her:

We are not our thoughts.

The problem is not our thoughts. The problem is identifying with the thought. We can never change or stop thoughts, but we can change how we look at something in our minds. Many of us spend a lot of time trying to change something outside but spend little time trying to change how we see it. This concept was new for all of us, and we enjoyed discussing the presentation together.
