In 2018, following the passing of his beloved beagle, Webster, Frank Payne was inspired to write a children’s book celebrating Webster’s life and the three years he spent as a therapy dog at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). Frank donated $1,000 from the book’s proceeds - his first of many gifts - to support the hospital’s work. Since then, his contributions have exceeded $28,000, benefiting the Children’s Tower and the child life department.
Frank’s most recent gift, which includes proceeds from his second book about Webster, funded two specially designed, beagle-themed wagons that comfort and transport patients in CHoR’s pre-operative and post-anesthesia care units.
“Mr. Payne has such a philanthropic heart and truly loves children,” said Siri Garrett, senior child life specialist, who fondly remembers working with Webster during his therapy dog days. “What better way than to give kids a friendly way of getting to and from surgery - or to have something fun to ride around in while waiting.”
The wagons, designed specifically for hospital use, include attachments for IV poles, cupholders, and sturdy handles for pushing. They provide comfort for children of all ages, especially those with sensory sensitivities. Some children even choose to be transported to the operating room in their wagon—a small but meaningful gesture that helps ease anxiety for both kids and their parents.
In addition to his donations, Frank—an avid believer in the power of reading—has also gifted dozens of books to young patients.
“Frank truly understands what kids need when they’re in the hospital,” Garrett said. “Whether it was bringing Webster to the bedside as a therapy dog, writing books, or his latest gift, it’s remarkable.”
