Greetings! The VPTA has been hard at work for our members. I wanted to take a moment to thank the PT, PTA and Student members that attended lobby day on January 16th. The General Assembly building is still under construction (and will be for the next several years). To manage this, we split our group of 30 or so attendees into smaller groups to meet with the Delegates and Senators. The main areas of discussion were based around Licensure Compact legislation, balance billing legislation, #choosept to fight the opioid epidemic as well as Athletic Training scope of practice. Thanks to everyone who took time to set up meetings with their representatives to discuss issues that are impactful for our profession here in Virginia. I think it is appropriate to give special thanks those that left the comforts of their home at 2 a.m. or before to ensure that they were on time to make their scheduled meetings….now, that is a super engaged group!

Prescribing exercise to meet the recommended intensity, frequency and duration are important to consider when educating our patients. Educating patients on exercise and its benefits is an important role of the rehabilitation team. Monitoring progression using the BORG Rating Scale of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is one simple way to ensure the intensity is met. RPE has been validated as a reliable measure for assessing intensity1 and the results of the studies suggest that combining aerobic, muscle strengthening, bone strength, flexibility, and balance is needed to maximize the health benefits.2

April 6th 2019

Join us for the 2nd annual National Advocacy Dinner to bring together students and clinicians from across Virginia and Tennessee! We will be discussing current legislative issues that affect our patients and our practice.
Dr. Michael Tamburello, Associate Professor in Old Dominion University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program, was presented the Excellence in Education Award at the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy awards ceremony at CSM 2019. His wife and several co-workers, colleagues, former students and current students were present for the awards ceremony. When accepting the award, Dr. T referenced a quote by Hippocrates, "Science is the father of knowledge, but opinion breeds ignorance." Dr.T is well-loved and respected for his dedication to science-based education and training his students to be astute consumers of research. ODU DPT is so pleased to share in honoring Dr. T as this award is just further evidence of his distinction and merit in addition to our faculty, alumni, and student opinions!
Firstly, thanks to all who worked to make VPTA’s Spring Conference at CSM successful! Many of the participants expressed their gratitude and gave much by way of positive feedback.

Plans are underway for VPTA Fall Summit 2019. Stay tuned for the details, and information on speakers and educational tracks. I am excited and hopeful that it will be another successful conference that is well liked and well attended. Once registration opens, please act as soon as possible to be ensured of a seat! Details will be forthcoming.

I just returned from an amazing trip to Florida. While escaping to Florida mid-winter sounds lovely, this was not exactly a margarita-ville kind of deal. As part of my training to become an instructor in the Fascial Manipulation-Stecco® (FM) method, I was invited/encouraged to attend a level one course held there, on rather short notice (sorry and thanks to all the rescheduled patients last week!). It was for the rehab team that keeps the New York Mets baseball team healthy, whole and functioning. We were at their spring training campus in Port Saint Lucie, FL, for the entire week while the Mets were on break.  It’s the best time to train the rehab team while the players are on leave. The lead instructor was Antonio Stecco and I was privileged to have the opportunity to teach with him while simultaneously being taught by him.

Happy 2019!

2018 was a great year for Blue Ridge! We ended our year with an awesome educational meeting! Murphy Demming College of Health Sciences hosted a Lower Extremity Cadaver Review course by Dr. Keith Bishop for BRD. The course was awesome and well attended by students and clinicians. A class of PTA students even attended to gain experience with cadavers that their program does not traditionally offer! This course was complimentary but BRD asked for donations made for the VPTA PAC in lieu of a course fee. BRD was able to raise over $200 for the PAC that evening!

Northern District would like to welcome everyone back from the busy holiday season, and we hope everyone is ready to kick off the 2019 New Year! We are extremely excited to welcome our new leadership table additions, Letha Zook, as our new Northern District Director and Jared Ritter, as treasurer. We hope you will make it to a meeting soon to meet them and the rest of the team. We had an amazing Fall 2018 year as we ended our meetings with our fellow friends at Shenandoah University PT department. SU hosted us again for a great learning experience with anatomy lab. Thank you to the SU PT department for letting us come. As CSM is in our backyard this January 2019, we will not have an official meeting in January; however, we have a full lineup for the rest of the year. We will be kicking off our first meeting on February 6th 2019 with Kerri Kramer Webb, MSPT, DPT, and her team at Fast track sports medicine and performance center in Fairfax, VA, as we learn about the “The key to long term success in running injuries." We hope to see you all there! Also a big congratulations to Arturo Avila-Silva, PTA, SPT, who was the winner of the federal advocacy scholarship!

The Tidewater District Executive Committee met in early December 2018 to appoint Laura Burns as the District Director (to fulfill the post elected in even years) and Tony Grillo as our Ethics Committee Representative. We extend our thanks for their service to our past Director Emily Hawkins and to Melanie Basinger in her previous role on the Ethics Committee. We welcome Laura and Tony to our Leadership team.
Thank you to everyone for a super memorable experience at CSM in DC this year. Lots of learning, connections, and fun in our own backyard!

Shenandoah University taught me two amazing lessons: how to become a caring physical therapist and how to become a global citizen. I learned that understanding the material in class was not enough, I learned that making a paycheck was not enough and I learned that we were gaining skills in school to make a larger impact on society locally and abroad.
