Association News
I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving and is enjoying the cool fall weather. This is truly one of my favorite times of the year. Our Fall Summit was a huge success by providing great courses, a productive annual members meeting, fun trivia night PAC fundraiser, and wonderful interviews with adaptive athletes sponsored by our student SIG. It was truly inspiring and humbling to hear their stories, perspectives, and how physical therapy has helped to facilitate their journey. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard and gave their time to make these events successful, as well as everyone who participated.

Volunteers like these are the lifeblood of our chapter, and we are always looking to add to our team. We have a wide variety of ways to participate and engage based on your areas of interest and amount of time involved. If you are curious or have a desire to give back to your profession, I would encourage reaching out to our chapter at vpta@vpta.org, visiting our website, or attending a local district meeting to learn more.

As the year comes to a close, we are looking forward to 2022 which will bring exciting changes. Changes such as strengthening our strategic plan, improving how we offer continuing education across the state, along with utilizing a combination of virtual and live courses. We hope to see you all at an event this year, whether it be in-person or virtual. Thank you all for your membership and have a wonderful holiday.

Sincerely,

Tony Grillo, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT
The words diversity, equity, and inclusion have rightfully come to the forefront of many a lexicon over the past year. APTA President, Dr. Sharon Dunn, released a resounding statement in May 2020 regarding the APTA's position against racism and systemic inequalities, and called for commitment, innovation, and strategic investment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our profession. Many companies, in healthcare, academia and beyond have begun emphasizing initiatives to improve DEI in their professional communities.

On November 4, CMS issued a rule requiring health care facilities staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 4, 2022. The CMS rule applies to Medicare and Medicaid-certified provider and suppliers in facilities that are regulated under the Medicare health and safety standards known as Conditions of Participation, Conditions for Coverage, or Requirements. Since outpatient private practices are not governed by such regulations, the CMS mandate does not apply to them. Under the CMS rule, individuals who provide services 100% remotely, such as fully remote telehealth or payroll services, are not subject to the vaccination requirements. Certain allergies, recognized medical conditions, or religious beliefs, observances, or practices may provide grounds for exemption. For full details of the CMS vaccination rule, please see our story and practice advisory published on our website.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has ramped up audits this year. While technically it is impossible to avoid an audit because Medicare is always actively analyzing claims, it’s possible to reduce the burden of a dedicated audit and help avoid large penalties.
