IIAV Members Storm Capital Hill in Washington DC

IIAV Young Agent Jill Roth made sure that none of the members attending the National Legislative Conference (NLC) were bored and scheduled appointments throughout the day with 10 legislators, including: Representatives Moran, Wolf, Cantor, Connolly, Rigell, Forbes, Hurt and Griffith – as well as Senators Warner and Webb.

The NLC was scheduled for the week immediately following the budget funding debate for the remainder of the year which came close to shutting down the Government. Voting for the continuing resolution occurred while IIAV members were in Washington. They also heard comments from Speaker Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana), both of whom remarked on the legislative power held by the national Big "I" organization.

IIAV members discussed with their legislators a number of legislative interests including health care reform and excluding agent fees/commissions from Medical Loss Ratios and asked for support for HR 1206; Flood insurance extension and reform included in HR 1309 (and opposition to HR 435 which would end the flood program); Agent Licensing and support for NARAB II legislation – HR 1112.

Participation in the National Legislative Conference is an integral initiative for IIABA’s legislative efforts. Close to 2,000 agents attended the national day on the hill and generated considerable public attention. IIAV members are encouraged to communicate their concerns on national issues to their congressmen while they’re in their home districts.
