A Word From AGCVA Chairman, Trip Smith

We hope that each of you are winding up a good year and enjoying this holiday season.

AGCVA has had a good year and recently celebrated another advocacy win! In collaboration with other like-minded associations, AGCVA was able to work to defeat the DOLI Heat Illness proposed regulation before it could get to a vote. In general, this bill would have required contractors to provide approximately one case of water for every worker when the temperature hit 85 degrees. AGCVA continues to lead the way in protecting workers while maintaining reasonable safety standards for the construction industry.

AGCVA looks forward to the coming General Assembly Session and to working with the new administration. We will continue to work for the issues affecting you, such as wage theft, independent contractor registration, PLAs, COVID-19 standards, and at the federal level, the PRO Act. Additionally, we welcome Kyler Hedrick to AGCVA as our Policy Manager. As outlined in our strategic plan, he will support our advocacy program by working on issues important to you, tracking legislation and regulations, and building relationships with legislators throughout the year. We want AGCVA to be the first call on any construction issues legislators face, and adding Kyler to our advocacy team will help us to achieve this goal.

We are working hard to secure permanent funding from the state on workforce development and our Building Your Future (FYF) initiatives. We look forward to furthering these efforts with the incoming administration. AGCVA already has some great workforce development events scheduled in the new year and we hope you will join us. Additionally, we encourage you to join us as we team up with other associations to participate in Virginia Small Business Day in Richmond on January 26, 2022. This is your opportunity to connect directly with lawmakers, helping educate them on issues important to the construction industry.

We are all looking forward to being back at our Annual Convention this year! Registrations are still rolling in and support from our sponsors is incredible. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have not yet registered, I hope you will do so. As a reminder, registration closes on January 7, but prices increase at the first of the year. Don't delay!  One of my favorite things about AGCVA is the time spent in the hallways with industry friends, the camaraderie, the memories made, and the sharing of lessons learned and innovative new ideas. Don't miss it; I'd love to connect with you in White Sulfur Springs at The Greenbrier.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
