A Word From AGCVA Chair, Chris Shifflett

Over many years, the construction industry has developed a stigma of being filled with tough individuals who get things done.  These individuals endure all sorts of stressors in their work and their personal lives. The perception that seeking help is not something a tough person would do, is one of the many reasons along with substance abuse, why our industry is at the top of the list for suicide rates.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – AGCVA has been sharing resources and links all month long, but I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight two valuable resources AGC member companies can take advantage of anytime you need them or at your own pace.

Youturn Health – learn more here

AGCVA members companies have access to this program at a discounted rate. Youturn Health provides tools and strategies shaped and delivered by a support network based on lived experiences. Your company must be a program participant for individuals to receive the below benefits.

This program can amplify the impact of your existing programs through:

  • Construction-Specific Programming: Changing the conversation starts with training and access. Teams have access to four construction-specific trainings including mental health 101, approaching employees, suicide support, and recovery first aid.  In addition, Youturn Health provides access to a construction peer support coaching call in line.
  • Peer Support: Trained and certified peer coaches use their own experience with substance use, behavioral health, and recovery to help your employees make meaningful steps in their own journey.
  • Online Learning and Assessments: Access to over 450 educational videos and stories that help people understand stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and more.
  • Family Support: Family and loved ones also get access to the program at no additional cost

AGC of America's online and self-paced Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Course is available for free to all AGCVA member companies.

Designed specifically for construction leaders, this course helps them recognize signs of mental distress, build a psychologically safe work culture, and confidently support team members who may be struggling.

It's important to remember that supporting mental well-being in construction isn’t limited to just one month, it’s an ongoing effort. I encourage all AGCVA Member Companies to take advantage of these resources and provide access to training that will assist front line leaders and employees who need it.  The stigma surrounding toughness in our industry won’t change overnight, but by taking the first step as employers, we can begin to create a safer, more supportive environment, an environment where we all share the responsibility to look out for and help each other.
