By Steve Vermillion, former AGCVA CEO

Dick Moyers was not only a colleague for nearly 20 years, but also a friend. His passing on June 8, while expected because of his illness, was still a shock.

Dick was an individual who cherished his family and friends. We frequently shared comments on our kids and families, sharing in the joys, and sometimes in the sorrow. He was very proud of Nancy, his children, and his grandchildren.

Dick was also devoted to AGCVA and our member community.

As a colleague, he was truly an association professional. He encouraged and supported our efforts as we sought to improve the association to make it an even more effective organization. To help us in these efforts, we attended a variety of association training programs offered by the American Society of Association Executives, as well as some in-house programs. Were these efforts successful? Just look at the trophy case in the lobby of the AGCVA building. It contains a wide variety of trophies and awards, including the AGC of America Chapter of the Year Award for 2008. Dick was a major factor in these successes.

His district functions were known to be a lot of fun. Although I did learn over the years to be careful at the Tidewater District’s Christmas Party (something about the ice sculpture…).

Dick’s events were always well-planned and executed. They were also very effective in advancing the construction industry in terms of professionalism, workforce development, and support of important charities to benefit our communities.

We shared a pride in the chapter’s accomplishments. We were also convinced that AGCVA was comprised of the best people and firms in one of America’s top industries….and we weren’t wrong.

I will miss him.
