A Word From AGCVA Chair, Anthony Smith

Happy May, fellow AGCVA members! Over the last few weeks as the weather has warmed, things are really moving in our districts. It's the season of golf tournaments, sporting clays, bourbon tastings, and plenty of outdoor networking events. Be sure to check the AGCVA calendar and find out what is happening in your area. I guarantee it will be worth your investment.

Although the legislative session has ended, AGCVA is still actively advocating for the construction industry and has continued to remain very active in the pay-if-paid discussion. AGCVA has already begun conversations with the Department of General Services (DGS), which will be leading the workgroup set up by the state to investigate the issue a whole. We’ll be looking for ways to engage all contractors (subs & GCs) in the conversation. Because we are the voice of the construction industry, we will be front and center on this issue.  For additional information on pay-if-paid, I encourage you to read the article submitted by Jim Harvey.  He offers tremendous detail and insight, so I urge you to take a look at what he has to say. You will find his article in the Legislative & Legal section of this newsletter.

Workforce development is consistently a significant issue for our members and one that I can personally attest to being a major issue in the industry. It is one that requires effort from all parties involved. However, we are doing our best to create the "easy button" for our members and have made this the focus of our upcoming summer conference. Through the many programs that we work with (Build Your Future Virginia, SkillsUSA Virginia, Network2Work, NHVirginia CareerWorks), we continue to help you make the critical connections that will allow you to find workers and, therefore, grow your team. At AGCVA’s Summer Conference taking place July 29-30 at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, you will be able to connect directly with a number of these organizations. Registration will open this week, and we know this will be a great opportunity for you to build your future workforce. All members are encouraged to attend, and I hope you will make plans to join us.
