Commitment to family values, good employees and great customers make a family business thrive, leaders of local multi-generational companies say. Officials with Charlottesville’s S.L. Williamson Co. Inc., an asphalt maker and paving firm, and city-based construction company Martin Horn Inc. credit their staffs and the businesses’ long-term commitment to customers for being able to survive economic downturns and to thrive in good times.
“For us, it’s been about taking care of your people that are out there working for you. They’re the ones who make your reputation,” said Blair K. Williamson, the third-generation leader of S.L. Williamson, founded 70 years ago.

 

 

PRESS CONFERENCE on the Construction Workforce Shortage Survey Results held on Tuesday, August 27 at EMC Fabrication Shop (Richmond, VA) AGC America CEO, Steve Sandherr, AGCVA CEO Gordon Dixon and AGCVA Chairman Bruce Tibbetts presented the survey and what AGC is doing to address these concerns. The Board for Contractors is routinely asked by licensees, citizens, and other individuals to clarify or interpret the regulations and statutes that govern the licensing programs that come under its authority. These interpretations and policies that have been developed as a result of them are reviewed on an annual basis and are used in the processing of applications, investigation of complaints, and by other government agencies for the issuance of construction permits and licensing requirements. At its meeting of June 18, 2019, the Board for Contractors completed the annual review of its policies and interpretations and the following document was adopted.

Careers in Construction Month Help us raise awareness about the opportunities in the construction industry and inspire the next generation of craft professionals. Encourage each state to proclaim October as Careers in Construction Month to help spread awareness of career opportunities available locally.

EMC isn’t the only company in the construction industry having a hard time finding qualified workers, according to the results of one recent survey.

More than 80% of Virginia construction firms report they are having a hard time filling hourly jobs requiring craft skills, jobs that represent the bulk of the construction workforce, according to the survey results released by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk.
The Virginia survey results were essentially the same as the national survey of 2,000 construction firms, showing that 80% are having difficulty finding qualified workers.

National Preparedness Month (NPM), is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning now and throughout the year. The 2019 theme is "Prepared, Not Scared."
