This year will see a number of new surety regulations taking effect across the country. These will require contractors to obtain construction bonds or contractor license bonds in different amounts and adjust to new compliance standards implemented by sureties. Moreover, questions about the state of the economy and what contractors can expect in terms of government spending are also on the table and require attention.

The way the construction industry has been taught to work and the way we’ve trained our workers are perfectly suited for a future world that no longer exists. Construction must shift from traditional knowledge workers to a new generation of learning workers. Knowledge workers are given specific information and skillsets and are expected to apply, grow and refine that knowledge over the course of their career. In contrast, learning workers are taught how to continually learn and apply new skills, adapting to changing work requirements as they arise.

Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer had an unusual request for the more than 1,000 people at his state of the city address March 20. On several big screens in front of the audience at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, an online quiz asked which of 13 development projects – like The Cavalier hotel or the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts – was the result of a public-private partnership. The answer turned out to be a bit of a trick question, since all of them included some kind of public funding.

Listen to ConstructorCast Podcast for all the Important Details
As of Feb. 7, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires all contractors to evaluate crane operators under the new final rule regulating crane operator qualification and evaluation. AGC of America spent nearly 16 years working with OSHA under three different presidential administrations to make this rule less burdensome and provide the greatest positive safety impact possible. The latest episode of ConstructorCast covers all the important details you need to know to ensure your firm is in compliance as the requirements take full effect and beyond.
