Governor allocates $5 million investment of federal workforce funds to redesign career pathways to place skills training at forefront
At an event held at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Governor Ralph Northam announced a collaborative effort to transform workforce programs offered through the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). Currently, many programs intended to train students with applied skills require them to take general education courses before advancing to essential skills-based courses. To best prepare students with the skills needed for high-demand, well-paying jobs, VCCS will work to redesign career pathways so that skills training begins at the start of each program.

With a whirring trio of reciprocating saws, Virginia elected officials and Hampton Roads education leaders cut the ribbon on a $1.2 million training center for welders, pipe fitters and other trades workers. Tidewater Community College unveiled the new Skilled Trades Academy in Portsmouth in a Dec. 10 dedication ceremony.

Democratic Congressmen Tim Kaine and Bobby Scott also used the occasion to talk about fighting for community college tuition help in Washington, D.C. They spoke with instructors and students in fields like carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, roofing and forklift-driving.

Safety

National AGC Safety Awards (NASA) program has been an ongoing effort since 1991 to offer AGC members an opportunity to evaluate their safety record. NASA compares an AGC member’s safety record with other AGC members according to the member size and construction type. Additionally, NASA provides a great opportunity for members who have excellent safety records to compete for nationally recognized awards.  The deadline for submission is February 7, 2019.
