Towne Insurance was ranked 59th by Business Insurance magazine amongst the Top 100 Largest Brokers of U.S. Business in the July 2017 issue. The agency climbed nine spots from the 2016 ranking, and continues to maintain its position in the top 1% of more than 45,000 independent insurance firms in the nation for the fifth consecutive year. This ranking was based on 2016 brokerage revenue, where Towne Insurance showed a 14.6% increase over the previous year.

- Seven in 10 construction companies say they're having difficulty finding enough skilled hourly workers, according to a survey by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Autodesk.
- Shortages were most common in the West (75%) and least common in the Northeast (63%). Companies are addressing the issue through in-house training (46%), more overtime (47%), increased use of subcontractors (41%), labor-saving equipment (22%), offsite prefabrication (11%) and virtual construction tools.
- Increased construction demand was reflected in hiring growth from July 2016 to July 2017 in 258 of the 358 markets tracked. Of those surveyed, 67% said it will be more difficult to meet their labor demands this year.
Dive Insight:
The reality of the labor shortage is especially daunting as the country gears up for a potentially massive infrastructure program. That has left some contractors wondering how they're supposed to participate when they are finding it difficult to meet current demand.
In June, the president signed an executive order that authorized the diversion of $200 million in Department of Labor job training funds toward apprenticeships. The president expressed a desire to create 5 million apprenticeships in the next five years. Yet Trump's 2018 budget request cuts DOL training and employment service funding by 21% and eliminates $1 million in women's training programs. The president said those cuts would be made up for through the apprenticeship initiative.
Trump also wants to give the private sector more control over apprenticeships and not require them to register their programs with the DOL. Critics have said that could result in low-quality training.

When school starts Sept. 5, Hampton teenagers will enter newly revamped freshman classes that will ask them to start making decisions that could impact the rest of their working lives.
This fall, every freshman in Hampton will enter into freshmen academies, described by school officials as small learning communities focused on groups of students and teacher teams. Each freshman will take Success 101, an elective designed to help him or her devise a 10-year career plan while exploring possibilities after high school.
Mission Tomorrow is the Richmond region's interactive career exploration event for students. The event will be held November 1 -2, 2017, at Richmond International Raceway.
Through an interactive series of activities and discussions with employers, Mission Tomorrow will encourage over 12,000 attending 8th graders to explore career interests and in-demand jobs from over 100 businesses in our region.

The Peninsula District hosted a Lunch & Learn on August 9th at the Kiln Creek Club. The luncheon was about the Virginia BEST Program and was presented by Scott Sutton - Director of Safety for W M Jordan Co.
AGC members learned how the process is going & what the challenges are. Members now have a better understanding of how they can benefit from this program.

Larry Little, vice president of support services and planning for VCU Health System, said the program is helping fill a need for construction workers while also helping Richmond residents.
“This training program has provided access for future employees who will help build our great city,” he said. “Training is often unavailable or difficult to obtain. It is our desire to develop and provide opportunities to the citizens of Richmond.”
Associated General Contractors of Virginia also contributed to the program. "Contractors need qualified workers to complete jobs on time and keep projects under budget at VCU, said Gordon Dixon, CEO of the organization. "This pilot program is a great opportunity to introduce construction careers to Richmond residents ready and willing to learn a valuable skill that lasts a lifetime."

OSHA warns of off-gassing - flooring product - Flak Jacket, which contains formaldehyde, is being applied to floor joist to slow the burning process should a house catch on fire. The coating mixture was recently modified by the manufacturer; as a result, the finished product is off gassing formaldehyde and creating issues in some 2200 homes in 4-5 different States. Although Colorado may have the majority of the homes.
It’s unknown whether other regions have been affected so this message is to make you all aware of the issue. The Directorate of Construction has shared information about this new hazard with construction trade associations (e.g., ABC, AGC, NAHB, NARI) and DCSP has been notified to share with the states and consultation services.
