2 + 2 = Careers in Construction

On May 29th AGCVA members spent their day showcasing careers in the construction industry to over 100 math students at JR Tucker High School in Richmond Va.  From sophomores to seniors, Algebra II and Geometry students were surprised to hear how the math they are learning applies to the construction industry.  They were even more surprised to hear the earning potentials and how they can apply for apprenticeship programs while still in school!

Our volunteers – Melissa Stallard (Capital Capital Insurance & Bonding Services Co.), Paul Stiles (The Bell Company), Chad Blalok and Chuck McCarthy (W.M. Jordan Company), and Bob Bonk and Chiara Arch (Draper Aden Associates) all came equipped to share how they started in the industry and what viable career options await a student that has a desire to work with their hands.  Students were introduced to our career pathway hub at Build Your Future (www.byf.org), where they can discover different construction trades and find the training they will need.

Within one day of visiting the school, we have had several students reach out to Courtney Baker (AGCVA’s Workforce Development Manager) seeking more information on next steps to starting their careers in construction.

Thank you to our members who spent their day investing in our future workforce.  And thank you to our host Holly Condon, a math teacher at Tucker High School, who wants to see her students presented with all options as they begin career exploration.
