As Virginia returns to a semblance of normal order in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, some things that the virus brought may be hanging around; namely rent relief.
  
Our Central Virginia chapter is partnering with VCU and Richmond Public Schools for the Ultimate Backpack Supply Drive! The program is designed to provide students with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies, free of charge, in the local community to ensure students start their school year on the right foot.

In our 2021 Virginia Communities magazine, we'd like to feature outstanding teams within our membership. Nominated teams can be an entire community team, maintenance team, office team, corporate team, etc. If you know a group that has stood out from the rest in providing excellent service to their residents in the first half of 2021, please submit their story, along with a photo, by July 23!
NMHC’s Rent Payment Tracker found 76.5% percent of apartment households made a payment by July 6th, 2021, which is a 0.9 percentage point decrease from payments made through July 6, 2020.

The sale to Reliant Group included three off-campus student housing communities near Virginia Tech: Hunter's Ridge (72 units), Collegiate Suites at Blacksburg (210 units) and Maple Ridge Townhomes (314 units) for a total of 596 units. 
Site work is beginning at Metropolois at Innsbrook. The two-phase development will total 700 apartment units and 13,000 square feet of commercial space. Phase 1, expected to cost $83 million, will include two apartment buildings totaling 402 units and a parking garage. 
Breeden Construction will serve as general contractor to redevelop the first two phases of the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood. The $18.5 million renovation project includes redevelopment of 81 total multifamily units. Construction was set to begin late June 2021.
The Retreat at Harbor Pointe, a 246-unit community along the Elizabeth River waterfront in Norfolk, recently celebrated their grand opening. The 100% affordable community includes units set aside for residents with physical and developmental disabilities, and offers Class-A features including a resort-style pool, modern fitness center, clubhouse, and an elevated dock and walking trail. 
Virginia Avenue Elementary, which has been dormant for over a decade, is getting a $24 million redevelopment. EquityPlus is turning the building and surrounding lots into 50 apartments and 45 single family homes. 
The luxury multifamily community in Scott's Addition celebrated topping out at the end of June. The building is the first of a trio to make up "Scott's Collection," and consists of five stories with 80 units and a lobby area. 
212-unit community, Spotswood Commons, was sold by The Dolben Company for $46 million in June.
