There are nearly 100 Roanoke properties listed on Airbnb right now, but just seven are sanctioned by the city.  The Roanoke City Council is now considering a new measure that could up the stakes, as it may revise the lodging tax code so it would apply to these homestay operations.


Hampton Roads is expected to lag behind the nation in apartment demand this year after experiencing job losses related to cuts in defense spending and lagging population growth, according to the latest Hampton Roads Real Estate Review and Forecast.


The proposed apartments are called The Retreat at Harbor Pointe, according to an application submitted to the city. Construction should begin next year and be complete within 18 months, said Kristopher Knepper, director of development for Virginia Beach-based Lawson Companies.


As new technology companies continue to percolate in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, the University of Virginia wants to know if its graduates can help provide more of the talent.


The 188-unit project would be the second phase of Port RVA, the first part of which is a neighboring 102-unit apartment building at 500 Hull St. developed in 2014 by McDonald’s Property Results. The company purchased both parcels five years ago.


The proposal for Main2525, the project next to Millie’s at 2501 E. Main St., calls for nearly 7,400 square feet of commercial space fronting East Main Street. Zoning allows for five stories, hence the need for a special-use permit.
