Traits of an Inspiring Leader

Do you manage or do you lead? To correctly answer that question, you must first know the difference between a manager and a leader. A manager manages tasks. A leader leads people. Let’s face it, our team members are the reason that we as leaders are employed. They lease our apartments, resolve customer concerns , maintain our assets and hopefully.... make our customers happy. It is our job to ensure that our team members are motivated, fulfilled and excited to make it a great day, every day! If we cannot provide inspiring leadership to our team members, they cannot provide an inspiring experience for our customers.

What does it take to be an inspiring leader? Really, it is quite simple. It starts within yourself and you have all of the power.

• You must have a vision. What does success look like to you? Once you figure it out, it is up to you to share it with your team. Help them see your vision.

• Have passion! If you aren’t passionate about what you do every day, it is probably time to reevaluate your chosen career path. Let your passion shine through in everything you do and your team members will surely follow suit. Imagine the impact a team full of passionate property management professionals can have on your business! • Build a great team. Surround yourself with rockstars! Are they committed to your vision? Do they share your passion? Just remember, you are only as strong as your weakest link. Once you have built your amazing team, nurture it. Take the time to provide proper training, set clear expectations from the start and provide feedback on an ongoing and consistent basis. "A" players want to know how they are doing and will appreciate the feedback.

• Be someone that your team members can respect. Make sound, ethical business decisions and commit to them. Be thoughtful and analytical taking the appropriate amount of time to consider all factors. Trust and empower but inspect what you expect. Be present for your team and make their day whenever possible.

• Have character. Know your leadership style and learn what it takes to motivate your team members. You may need to adapt your style to suit the needs of your team members.

Now, take another hard look at yourself. Are you an inspiring leader?
