Virginia Asphalt Association is pleased to announce that David T. Lee joined the Association effective April 15, 2019, as our Vice President of Engineering.

David recently retired from his position as Salem District Materials Engineer for VDOT where he was responsible for the preliminary engineering, materials quality control and quality assurance activities for one of the largest construction programs in the state.

David looks forward to working with member companies and visiting labs over the next several months. Please join us in welcoming him to VAA and look for a more in-depth article on David in Virginia Asphalt magazine coming next month.

 

Virginia's Best Paving Awards are now open for nominations!  Review your best 2018 paving jobs and nominate worthy projects for these categories: Commercial, Municipal, Roadway, Airport, and Green.  All nomination guidelines and forms can be found on the VAA website.  Remember, you can't win if you don't enter, so nominate your best projects today!

Held in 2002, 2010, and 2014, this conference builds on the previous conference’s accomplishments by combining the annual Road Profiler Users’ Group meeting with discussions and presentations from other disciplines of non-destructive pavement evaluation.

The first R J Schreck Scholarship Golf Tournament of 2019, hosted by the Tidewater Region, was played at Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk, VA on April 3rd. It was a beautiful day with a bit of a breeze, just perfect for golf.

*VECAT Exams MUST be Completed by June 1*
If you have taken a VECAT class either in a classroom or online but have not completed the final exam, please remember to schedule and take the exam BEFORE June 1.
 
*Proficiency Test Reminder*
If you have taken Plant I, II or Mix Design in 2019, please remember that you also have proficiency testing to complete to become fully certified.  This may be done at any time up until NOVEMBER 30th.

Additionally, VECAT has been in contact with local High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers to set up Asphalt information sessions and to recruit students seeking career opportunities in the industry. If you are interested in hiring an apprentice in the summer/fall timeframe of 2019, or have an employee(s) who you think shows promise for future upward mobility, you can get information about the VECAT Apprenticeship Program from Carter Iseman at ciseman@vaasphalt.com.

State & National News

Governor Ralph Northam has announced an amendment to Senate Bill 1768, sponsored by Senator Monty Mason. In the legislation’s current form, Senate Bill 1768 would prohibit drivers from holding a communications device in highway work zones. The Governor’s proposed amendments would expand this hands-free legislation to be a statewide law.

Transportation officials will spend the next several months honing a list of Interstate 81 improvements to tackle first following the passage of a funding plan from the General Assembly.
 
Gov. Ralph Northam appeared before the Commonwealth Transportation Board in Richmond on Tuesday, less than a week after the Virginia General Assembly approved his last-ditch amendments to begin funding more than $2 billion in improvements to I-81.
 
 
   
Secretary of Transportation Shannon Valentine announced important leadership changes within the Transportation Secretariat.
 
Effective Thursday, April 25, John W. Lawson has been appointed as acting Deputy Secretary of Transportation. Lawson has served as Chief Financial Officer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) since 2010 and has worked for the agency since 1987.
