Three out of every four years, the World of Asphalt is hosted in the United States by NAPA, AEM, and NSSGA. This year the event was held at the Houston Convention Center from March 6 to 8. More than 5,000 attendees had the opportunity to see the latest and greatest equipment, learn from the numerous educational sessions, and network with counterparts from around the world. This year Trenton Clark, VAA Executive Vice President, joined Dr. Dave Newcomb, Professor Texas A&M University, to provide an educational session on pavement design. Dr. Newcomb walked students through the pavement design and evaluation process. Mr. Clark followed Dr. Newcomb with a presentation and live demonstration of PaveXpress. With more than 8,000 recurrent users from around the world, PaveXpress is one of the most utilized pavement design programs. Within a few minutes, students learned how to take the engineering and design aspects outlined by Dr. Newcomb and have PaveXpress develop an overlay design following the 1993 AASHTO Pavement Design Guide. Mr. Clark also stated PaveXpress will perform new pavement designs, both asphalt and concrete (note: rigid pavement design is based on the 1998 AASHTO Supplement). To close the session, Newcomb and Clark reiterated the need for proper forensics and to avoid over-designing pavements.  Make plans now to attend the next WOA in Indianapolis, Indiana, Feb. 12 – 14, 2019.
